75th Anniversary of Universal Postal Union (U.P.U.)- 50 piastre

This commemorative series was issued by the Syrian Republic in 1949 to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (U.P.U.), celebrating the 1874 signing of the Treaty of Berne. The issuance held significant national pride, as the fully independent Syrian Republic had officially joined the global postal network in May 1946, just a month after achieving full sovereignty. Produced as a set of four individual stamps and an accompanying souvenir sheet (Michel #578–581), this series remains highly distinct in Syrian philatelic history because it was issued during the brief, turbulent presidency of General Husni al-Zaim following his military coup earlier that year. The visual iconography of the set directly reflects the transition of international mail into the modern aviation age. The designs prominently feature themes of global connection, combining illustrations of contemporary airplanes soaring over Damascus alongside historical regional scenery including the French Armée du Levant fortress at the ancient archaeological site of Ain Al-Arous in the Raqqa Province. To anchor the political shift of 1949, certain denominations also incorporate a portrait of General Husni al-Zaim. Combining exquisite engraving with symbolic maps and aircraft, this landmark U.P.U. issue serves as a striking record of Syria's mid-century modernization and shifting post-colonial executive power.
