Colonel Husni Zayim - 25 piastre
This commemorative series was issued by Syria in 1949 to mark the Revolution of March 30, 1949 (coup d'état), which brought Colonel Husni al-Zaim to power. Marking a major turning point as the first military coup in Syria's modern post-independence history, the event overthrew President Shukri al-Quwatli following widespread political and public dissatisfaction over the outcome of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The postal administration issued these stamps to legitimize and celebrate the new military-led regime, standardizing the narrative as a necessary "national correction" or "revolution."
The visual iconography of the set directly reflects the transition of international mail into the modern aviation age. The designs prominently feature themes of global connection, combining illustrations of contemporary airplanes soaring over Damascus alongside historical regional scenery including the French Armée du Levant fortress at the ancient archaeological site of Ain Al-Arous in the Raqqa Province. To anchor the political shift of 1949, certain denominations also incorporate a portrait of General Husni al-Zaim. Combining exquisite engraving with symbolic maps and aircraft, this landmark U.P.U. issue serves as a striking record of Syria's mid-century modernization and shifting post-colonial executive power.
